‘Revoicing Medieval Poetry’ is a long-running collaborative project exploring the creative, aesthetic, political, and cultural stakes of revoicing the medieval, understanding ‘revoicing’ as an act which encompasses and exceeds translation, allusion, and citation.

For IONA, we propose a revoicing workshop that will give participants the opportunity to explore and experiment with creative translation methods drawn from the research and/or practice of the workshop leaders. The idea is to give participants an opportunity to step out of their comfort zone as translators, exploring how creative experiment can also be a critical act. We anticipate a maximum group size of 20, with four facilitators introducing short writing/revoicing/visual translation exercises. The session will have a run time of two hours.

We will facilitate translation/writing exercises that might include: revoicing through collage or cut-up text and image, after Edwin Morgan; small press practices of book making, after Bill Griffiths and the archives at KCL; etymological poetry, after Carl Gent and Caroline Bergvall. We also hope to bring in a practitioner (poet or visual artist) to run an exercise. Participants will have the opportunity to test out new methods, produce some open-ended initial translations, and to reflect together on what the value of creative experiment might be for researchers.
